PEOPLE with disabilities will now find it easier to cross a busy main road through the village of Whitley.

Following a two-year battle, Melksham Without Parish Council has solved an access problem in Corsham Road for wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

The council has managed to persuade Wiltshire Council to drop the kerbs to allow people with disabilities to cross First Lane and Middle Lane more easily.

Parish clerk Teresa Strange said they had received several requests from concerned residents.

“People with wheelchairs and mobility scooters have found it difficult to access the Mavern Care Home, the Reading Room, and the church,” she said.

The parish council worked with Wiltshire Council's Community Area Transport Group and Melksham Area Board to fix the problem.

Work started on 22 May and took two weeks, with the cost being jointly funded by all three organisations.

In addition, the Parish Council is paying for additional works to improve the condition of the pavement at the bottom of Middle Lane while the traffic management scheme is in place.
