MELKSHAM town centre will be closed for two hours on Saturday during the highly popular Christmas Lights switch-on event.

The lights are being switched on at 5pm in the Market Place outside Melksham Town Hall and will be accompanied by a short burst of fireworks.

The road closure takes place from 4pm to 6pm from the Gompels Roundabout to King Street and Spa Road.

Motorists will still be able to leave Church Street Car Park turning left but not enter it after 4pm.

The town’s taxi rank in the Market Place will temporarily move further along the road to outside Lloyds Bank.

Melksham Christmas Lights Group spokesman, Paul Weymouth, said: “We’re working as hard as we can to make it something special!

The switch-on will be preceded by a traditional Christmas Fair in Melksham Assembly Hall from 2pm to 4.45pm.

There will be more than 50 stalls inside and outside the Assembly Hall, as well as children’s rides. As usual, Father Christmas will be sitting in his Grotto inside the Town Hall.

The Melksham Christmas Lights Group received a £5,000 Town Council grant to help put on this year’s display.

The group also staged a series of fundraising events to install lights along Town centre streets.
