POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 78-year-old man died following a road traffic collision in Melksham last night.

Officers were called to Spa Road at 6.26pm yesterday to the collision involving a silver Volkswagen Golf and the male pedestrian.

The accident – which happened between Market Place and Coronation Road – closed Spa Road for several hours while police investigations took place.

Paramedics attended but the victim, who was from Melksham and was believed to have been crossing the road at the time, was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volkswagen Golf stopped at the scene. Police said the driver of the vehicle behind, a grey Citroen C1, did not stop but later called from home to report the accident.

The investigation into the cause of the collision is currently ongoing. No arrests have been made.

Wiltshire Police would like to appeal for any witnesses, including anyone who saw the two cars driving in convoy around the time of the collision, to get in touch.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Tom Wilson by calling Wiltshire Police on 101.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously by phoning Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
