WILTSHIRE Police are to hold talks with Melksham Town Football Club about future security at the Oakfield Stadium.

The discussions follow crowd trouble after Saturday’s FA Vase quarter final clash against Thatcham Town FC which Melksham lost 0-1.

Two men were arrested, one on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. Another man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer but then released.

Superintendent Chris Chammings said: “I am pleased to say that although there were two arrests, overall the atmosphere in the town was fairly good and any incidents were resolved swiftly by officers without any cause for concern.

“I will now be working with the club so we can have a full debrief of the match and look at any areas for improvement for the future.”

There was a strong police presence at the Oakfield Stadium to cope with the 2,208 people who attended because of the potential for trouble before, during, or after the match.

Darren Perrin, Melksham Town’s commercial manager, said: “I have nothing but praise for the way the police handled the situation. We cannot thank them enough. They were absolutely magnificent.

“We had intelligence from Thames Valley Police during the week that it was likely that a small group of 25-30 Reading supporters, who had been subject to banning orders by their own club, would come to the game intent on causing trouble.”

Mr Perrin also praised the restraint shown by most of the Melksham supporters. “On the day, we had phenomenal support from Melksham.

“Our supporters showed great restraint in the face of provocation from a few mindless idiots.”
