Father-of-two raises £1.3k for hospice in wife's memory

A father-of-two from Melksham has raised more than £1,000 for a local hospice by cycling in his wife’s memory.

Mark Cleverley, from Bowerhill, cycled from Bath to Brecon in mid Wales on June 20 for the Dorothy House Hospice in Winsley, after staff there cared for his wife Mandy before she died from tumours in her brain on June 28, 2007.

The date of the fundraiser, which 20 other people linked to the hospice also took part in, was timed to coincide with what would have been his wife’s birthday two days later, on June 22.

Mr Cleverley, 41, a former self-employed courier, who gave up his job to look after his children Laura, 14 and Daniel, 12, following his wife's death, raised £1,300 for the hospice in total.

He said: “My kids think it was great and they updated their Facebook pages on the day to let people know what was happening and how I was doing.

“I was texting them when I was out there and doing it to let them know.

“We left Winsley at 7am on the day, so I was pretty tired and it didn’t help that it was quite a long way, but I would do it again”

Mr Cleverley now volunteers at the hospice after seeing the good work they did and how they supported his wife and family.

He said: “I have seen both sides of the hospice now that I volunteer there and they are fantastic, no one can or ever does say a bad word about them.”

Anyone wanting to donate money to the cause can visit Mr Cleverley’s Just Giving webpage at www.justgiving.com/markcleverley until September 21.
