POLICE raids in Melk-sham netted £20,000 in cash, as well as suspected stolen goods, counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco.

The two raids, on a home in Granville Road and a business property in King Street, took place last Friday at 6pm, following a tip-off to police.

The Melksham Neigh-bourhood Policing Team, assisted by other officers, seized a large number of items from both buildings.

A 50-year-old woman from Melksham was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and breaching the Trade Marks Act.

She has been bailed while police continue their inquiries.

Magistrates granted police permission to confiscate the cash for four months, while the investigation continues.

Trading Standards and UK Customs and Excise are understood to be conducting their own inquiries.

Melksham community beat manager PC Kane Fulbrook-Smith encou-rged more people to come forward with tip-offs.

He said: “We do take notice of, and appreciate, any information that comes in.

“We do take seriously, and will act on, information given to us as quickly as possible, to disrupt any form of criminal activity.”

There was a fascinating documentary on TV a few months ago...showing how dodgy 'bacci' is processed.....put a new slant on 'smoking kills' as huge amounts of illegal chemicals were used to bleach and 'clean' the tobacco!!.....buying bacci in the pub is high risk!
