Pay up day for Melksham raiders
12:00pm Sunday 17th June 2012 in Melksham
Two young men, who made off with £25,000 of gems when they burgled the jewellery shop next door, have been ordered to pay back a fraction of the loot’s value.
Ashley Lloyd and Jason Simpson have been told to pay back less than £1,500 from their haul, under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
But should the pair come into money in the future, they could be ordered to cough up the rest of the £25,000 each.
Lloyd, 21, has been ordered to pay £880 and forfeit a camcorder, thought to be worth £150. Simpson, 19, must pay £210.
They have been given eight weeks to hand over the money or face a further seven days in custody and still owe the cash.
The pair used a crowbar to break through the side door of neighbour West Country Jewellers in Melksham town centre on February 22.
They smashed a CCTV camera before plundering gems from display cabinets.
Then they started to sell the booty at a number of pawnbrokers across town.
Lloyd and Simpson, both of High Street, Melksham, pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary and were both jailed for 14 months during a court case in April.
