Police detain man who reportedly carried air rifle

5:50pm Friday 1st February 2013 in Trowbridge

Police were called today (Friday 1) after a member of the public reported that they had seen a man carrying an air rifle in Trowbridge Park at 3.47pm.

Officers were deployed to the area and began a search, which included a helicopter being sent up to assist with the search at about 4pm.

A man, who matched the description given by the witness, was seen entering an off license on Roundstone Street, Trowbridge.

Traffic was stopped on Roundstone Street, while the police entered the shop and detained the man. He was taken to Melksham police station pending further enquiries.

A police statement said: "Police were called at 3.47pm by a member of the public who claimed they had seen a man carrying an air-rifle or rifle in Trowbridge Park.

“No weapon was found and no other reports of a gun were received and no threats were made to staff in the shop.”

So a road closed and much ado about nothing, the guy wasn't even carrying anything. Even if he had been carrying an air rifle it was possible he had lawful authority, coming from a shooting club or taking it to a shop to be repaired etc.

The police have a duty to respond to reports from members of the public, especially where firearms are involved. It is also possible that the man detained was 'known' to the police. Ok, so no weapon was found but at least there was a robust response.Some people are very keen to criticise without being in possession of the facts or realising what the outcome could have been.
