Man arrested on drugs and explosive charges after 'major incident' in Trowbridge
11:10am Tuesday 24th September 2013 in Trowbridge
The man arrested yesterday after a fire in a Trowbridge flat sparked a major evacuation remains in custody at Melksham Police Station this morning.
The 27-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis and possession of explosive materials yesterday evening.
The alarm was raised shortly before 6pm yesterday, when two fire crews were called to a flat on the corner of Bond Street and Wesley Road.
On entering the property firefighters extinguished the fire, which had started in a malfunctioning washing machine.
They then conducted safety checks of the other properties in the building, where they discovered "items of concern", which were later confirmed to be suspected explosive chemicals.
The police sealed off the scene, set up a cordon and evacuated hundreds of homes in the area for several hours, while bomb disposal experts from the MoD attended the scene.
The area was deemed safe around 8.40pm, and residents were allowed to return to their homes, although a police presence still exists at the scene of the fire. The suspect was arrested shortly after.
Detective Inspector Mark Power said: "I’d like to thank the local residents and members of the public for their co-operation and patience during the evacuation and initial enquires yesterday evening.
‘People may notice a small on-going police presence in the area today as our enquiries continue.
‘If anyone does have any concerns there will be members of the local Neighbourhood Policing Team in the area throughout the day that they can approach. Alternatively they can contact police on 101."
