Young and old had a flipping good time taking part in Trowbridge’s Shrove Tuesday pancake races this morning.

Dozens of people took to the Fore Street course to compete while hundreds cheered them on from the sidelines at the Trowbridge Town Council event.

There were separate races for men, women and children with a relay also taking place which all saw entrants tossing their foam pancakes and running as fast as they could.

Maryrose Mantle, Trowbridge Town Council community development officer, said: “We’ve had lots of wonderful fun today.

"I’m really pleased that we had so many children taking part and it was a joy to see quite a lot of healthy competition.

“The event is good old-fashioned fun and left many with smiles on their faces.”

Trophies and medals were given out to race winners while everyone that took part received a certificate.

Adam Casserly won the men’s race, Clare Mitchell tasted victory in the women’s category and Courtney Jenkins took top spot in the Larkrise School competition.

While, in the relay race Active Trowbridge came first, the Amber Foundation was second and Paddy Power came third narrowly edging out the Wiltshire Times’ team.

Mr Casserly, an Active Trowbridge competitor, said: “It was really good fun, I’ve only just moved to the area from London and it felt like a nice way to become part of the community.

"I’m really pleased to have done so well in both the races I entered and at Active Trowbridge we are always really pleased to support things going on in the town.”

The races saw a few flips, slips and trips along Fore Street but no injuries were suffered during the event.

Mrs Mantle said: “I’m pleased that everybody who took part really got into the spirit of the occasion.

"I’d like to thank everyone who competed, the town council organising team, Trowbridge Lions and everyone who cheered on the competitors.”

And at Trowbridge Rugby Club, foster carers, social workers and support workers from the Wiltshire region of the National Fostering Agency had fun with their Pancake Day event.
