People from all walks of life turned out for the funeral of legendary Trowbridge bar owner and musician Alan ‘Peewee’ Hunt today.

More than 400 people showed up at the service in West Wiltshire Crematorium to pay their last respects to the hugely popular figure, who died at the Royal United Hospital in Bath on September 23 following a battle with cancer.

The father-of-four ran his bar, Peewee’s Real Ale Bar, for 30 years in Castle Street and then Church Street, Trowbridge, with it quickly becoming a favourite among punks, hippies, goths and bikers.

He was also landlord at The White Swan in Church Street for 10 years.

As a tribute to him dozens of bikers, including several Hells Angels, followed the funeral procession behind the hearse when it left from the pub.

During the funeral, messages of condolence picked out from a book put together by The White Swan and The Three Horseshoes pub in Bradford on Avon were read out.

A message from Saun Dobson, landlord of The Three Horseshoes, said: “Peewee lived a full and eventful life, one bursting at the seams and full to the brim. We know this from the stories he told.

“Through a random twist of fate he became the landlord of the best pub ever.

"When he told you of past events the colours were brighter and his stories would always go up to 11 twice.”

Peewee also fronted rock band Lucy la Stique and Mechanical Horsetrough and following the messages of condolence and eulogies from friends, musician Mike Silver played an acoustic version of Old Fashioned Saturday Night.

Funeral celebrant Angela Ward said: “Peewee was a larger than life character, with a larger than average heart. He had time for all kinds of people he met throughout his life.

“He was a total legend and all around good guy. I know that celebrating his life will go on well past this service.

"I was fortunate enough to meet Peewee when he booked my band and that pub was the only place to be back in the day.”

John Alderslade, Village Pump Festival director, said that Peewee’s name will be added to the festival’s memorial bench at White Horse Country Park on October 26 for his contributions over the years.

Following the service, Peewee’s family invited his friends and relations to share memories and stories of him at Trowbridge Rugby Club, before moving on to The White Swan.
