A Trowbridge dog-owner will be thanking the Greek Gods that her dog, Zeus, was returned safe and sound by police this week.

PCSOs Till and Greenland came across the white German Shepherd on Bradley Road near Yeoman Way around 8pm on Monday.

Zeus was running around in the middle of the road when the two officers picked him up.

The friendly dog was taken to Trowbridge Police Station where police attempted to locate the owner.

Due to the late hour, no vets were open to scan the dog for a microchip but Garston veterinary group in Frome answered the calls for help.

Sergeant Gill Hughes said: “The drama was trying to find out who he belonged to.

“A lady from Garston in Frome came over, scanned his tag and said the owner was in Wales.”

With the microchip data out of date, the police control room were forced to contact the previous owner in Wales just as the Zeus’ current owner phoned in.

Sergeant Hughes said: “It was good to be micro-chipped but the dog didn’t have a tag on it with a name or number.

“He was a very friendly dog.”

It is not the first time this month that Trowbridge Police have been dealing with stray animals.

In the early hours of Sunday October 4, three domestic rabbits were located in the car park of Clanger Woods close to Yarnbrook.

The rabbits were tame and it is believed that they were dumped by their owner.

They were rescued by officers who feared the pets would not have survived if left to fend for themselves, and taken to a sanctuary.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Cerys Powell at Trowbridge Police Station on 101.
