Tireless residents of Trowbridge and Westbury have been recognised for making a significant impact on their communities, during an awards ceremony organised by a housing association.

Sovereign Housing’s first Community Awards recognised the positive impact individuals, charities and community groups have had on its residents.

In total, 19 prizes were handed out for Sovereign’s area, including one for Amanda Edwards, of Westbury, who gives up time to help her housebound neighbour with chores and errands.

Miss Edwards, 50, said: “I just go about doing it day-to-day, without thinking about it, but it’s nice to know you are appreciated.

“I have been helping him for the last 10 years, every day, with everything from washing and cooking to doing the bills.”

The chairman of the Longmeadow Tenants and Residents Association in Trowbridge, James McDonald, was recognised for tireless fundraising to support a youth group.

Despite being the carer for his wife and father, he organises social activities and events, as well as helping to raise money for residents who lost belongings in the Weaver’s Drive sheltered scheme fire last year.

Of his award win at the Newbury College event last month, Mr McDonald, 43, said: “It is a great achievement for me, as well as recognising all the volunteers who help out the Longmeadow TARA.”

Sovereign residents, staff and the public were asked to nominate people, groups or charities that had made a difference.
