Thousands gathered for the laying of wreaths at the war memorial in Trowbridge on Sunday, following a parade from St James’ Church, for a service of remembrance and thanksgiving.

Among those who laid wreaths were the Leader of Wiltshire Council, Jane Scott, and South West Wiltshire MP Andrew Murrison.

They were joined by representatives of the White Ensign Association, Normandy Veterans Association and Royal British Legion and other uniformed organisations.

Mayor of Trowbridge Glyn Bridges, who also laid a wreath, said: “Everybody seemed to think that we had record numbers and it was a huge crowd.

“There must have been at least 2,000, which took everyone by surprise. It was moving and it took on special significance, with it being the centenary of the First World War.

“The church service was also very poignant, so it was a lovely day.”

Over in Westbury, the Remem- brance Day service brought out nearly 500 people to mark the centenary of the First World War.

The annual parade was cancelled, because of roadworks in the town, and a short march was made along the High Street to the war memorial in Edward Street.

The memorial had been cleaned and re-engraved this year, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

More than 40 wreaths were laid during the service.

It is planned that a full parade will be held again next year.
