Not everyone was impressed by the Christmas lights switch-on in Trowbridge on Saturday.

People have complained about the position of the stage where star guest Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis, switched on the lights – in front of the old HJ Knee store in the middle of Fore Street – rather than at the Market Street end of the road outside the Town Hall.

Town crier Trevor Heeks said people were unhappy about the position as they were unable to see from further down the street.

Mr Heeks said: “People complained about where the stage was as the market meant that there was a restricted space in front of the stage. It certainly wasn’t ideal.”

Resident Steven Saunders has written to event organisers branding it “an embarrassment for Trowbridge”.

Trowbridge town clerk Lance Allan said the organisers try to do something different each year.

He said: “It is difficult to have an all-day street closure on Market Street to put the stage in front of the Town Hall.

"This year we thought it was more important to make a full day of the event, rather than concentrating on a couple of hours in the evening.

"We took the opportunity of Knee’s having closed to put the stage in the centre of Fore Street.”
