More than 35 businesses have signed up to take part in a scheme brought forward by Trowbridge Community Area Future, which offers people a safe haven when they need it.

The Safe Place scheme enables members of the public to visit registered businesses to seek help and advice or take refuge if they feel vulnerable.

The TCAF group has taken the initiative forward and has had support from the police, Wiltshire Victim Support and Trowbridge Town Council.

Inspector Chris Chammings said: “The launching of Safe Place within Trowbridge helps bridge the gap between a person finding themselves in a vulnerable situation and emergency response and assistance.

“This initiative will undoubtedly prevent harm or suffering coming to members of our community that need some assistance.”

Trowbridge is the sixth town to launch the initiative following Salisbury, Devizes, Melksham, Westbury and Swindon.

Registered businesses display an A5 circular orange sticker in their windows to let people know they are involved.

Sheri O’Reilly, manager at Timpsons, said: “We have an open-door policy anyway and strive to be friendly and approachable.

“Only last week a customer needed to catch their breath, and have a rest and a drink,  and we were very happy to help.”

The Safe Place scheme continues to welcome new business members. For more information call TCAF on 01225 765072 or email tcaf@trowbridge.gov.uk
