Guardian journalist Charlotte Higgins gave pupils at Clarendon Academy a fascinating insight into how the paper covered the Paris terror attacks during a talk last Friday.

The chief arts writer spoke at length about her work in the media to pupils in Year 11, 12 and 13 and how journalism had changed with the arrival of the internet and social media.

She focused on the recent atrocities in Paris, talking about how newsdesks responded to different events and how a team of journalists worked together to bring them to print.

The pupils, some of whom were budding journalists, asked a number of thoughtful questions following the main presentation.

Teacher Mike Griffiths, the organiser of the event, said: “It was a huge success and the bit on the events in Paris, in particular, was fascinating for the pupils.

“She explained clearly how the Guardian would respond to such major events and how issues that would normally be big in a usual week take the back seat.

“Charlotte also spoke about how she got into the media and her career path, which was fascinating for the pupils, especially those who are interesting in a career in journalism. They all found the talk very informative.”
