Members of the University of the Third Age in West Wiltshire are backing Trowbridge’s bid to get its own Monopoly board for a special 80th anniversary edition.

The county town is going up against four other regional capitals to mark the game’s anniversary, with Trowbridge competing against Dorchester, Exeter, Taunton and Truro for the honour of having its own board.

Winning Moves UK, which is making this official version of Monopoly under license from the game’s owners Hasbro, confirmed that votes for the five contenders will be counted up until February 28, with the winner announced in the spring.

The West Wilts U3A, which provides activities for older people no longer in full-time work, has a number of groups that play board games and said it would welcome a Trowbridge version of Monopoly.

Chairman of the group Glyn Evans said: “I think it is a great idea and Trowbridge has a lot to offer, with its interesting history and historical buildings.

“The town is on the up with the regeneration of several key buildings, such as the new Civic Centre and County Hall, while there is also St Stephen’s Place and the new development at Bowyers.

“I think it would make for a great Monopoly board and if you look at the board I could see how it would look with pictures of Trowbridge landmarks. I think the U3A would enjoy playing a special Trowbridge edition.”

The place that comes top of the polls will get their own board, which will see 22 customised property sites swapping places with the likes of Mayfair and Park Lane from the Monopoly original.

U3A member Peter Chapple added: “It would be fantastic for Trowbridge to get its own board. The town has a lot of history, especially with the Magna Carta, and I think it would be ideally suited.”
