A SCHOOLGIRL - inspired by her mum’s battle against cancer - has organised a coffee morning to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Lily Baldy, eight, asked her mother Kelly if she could hold the fundraiser at their home, after finding out more about the physicist and chemist Marie Curie in a science lesson at Paxcroft Primary School.

Learning more about the history of cancer treatment and Curie’s significant contribution, Lily decided to fundraise for the cancer charity as her mum had beaten the disease.

Mrs Baldy, who lives with her husband Kris and children Lily and Charlie in Corbin Road, Trowbridge, was diagnosed with a rare type of soft tissue cancer in March last year, before being given the all-clear in October.

She said: “When Lily came home from school she told me they had learnt about Marie Curie in a science lesson and she said ‘people used to die from cancer mum, but that is not true any more’.”

“As I was diagnosed with cancer and it was close to her heart, she was compelled to do something. She wanted people to come along and know exactly why she was doing it.”

Lily made her own posters and invited neighbours and fellow pupils to the coffee morning last Wednesday, raising just over £125.

Mrs Baldy added: “We didn’t tell her about the cancer at first, but she was very supportive and when I picked her up from school and told her I had been given the all- clear she cheered and said 'I’ve got my mummy back'.

“It was really touching to see how much hard work she put into the event. She made loom bands to sell and we spent six hours baking cakes.

“It is the first thing like this that she has done. She is such a caring young girl and has already said that she wants to do something else, but I said we better have a bit of a rest first.”

The money from the coffee morning will be put towards Paxcroft Primary School’s own fundraising effort for Marie Curie Cancer Care, which has so far seen Year 3 and 4 children and parents raise over £892.
