Man given jail warning over drugs

DRUG grower Nathan Livings has been warned he faces jail if he is caught with cannabis in the next two years.

The 32-year-old, of Regents Place, Trowbridge was sentenced to a suspended prison term after admitting growing the drug at his home.

He claimed he took it for medicinal purposes and not for financial gain.

Livings was caught after he was spotted driving erratically in the early hours of Thursday June 15 last year.

Jason Taylor, prosecuting, told Swindon crown court said he was stopped at about 2.30am and officers suspected he was under the influence of drugs.

As they got him to the police station he dropped a small package which turned out to be cannabis resin.

His blood was tested and it was found to have a high level of cannaboids in it, Mr Taylor said.

Officers then searched his house and found a derelict hydroponics growing unit and about 500 grams of cannabis.

They also found 0.9 grams of ecstasy and £8,265 in cash which is the subject to a separate financial investigation.

When he was questioned Livings admitted he had grown his own cannabis and the drugs found were from the harvest he had in February last year.

He said that all of the drugs he grew were for his own use and he was not a dealer.

Livings admitted cultivating cannabis along with possession of it and ecstasy.

Sarah Regan, defending, said she had a letter from her client's GP which confirmed he knew about Livings' cannabis usage.

She said because of the side effects of pain he suffered for other conditions he self medicated with the drug.

"That is why he grew it, not to supply it or to derive any financial benefit from it," she said.

Imposing a suspended sentence Judge Sean Overend said "If you commit any other offence, like possessing cannabis, like possessing ecstasy, like producing cannabis, over the next two years you will not only face sentence for that but the six months for this too."
