AMATEUR bakers donned their aprons to create one of Mary Berry’s signature cakes for a Comic Relief challenge organised by Trowbridge sugar craft supplies and kitchenware store H.B. Pitt.

The friendly bake-off competition involved entrants taking home the recipe for the Great British Bake Off star’s cherry and almond ring cake and deciphering it in the style of the BBC show’s technical challenge.

Each of the budding cooks then took their creations to the store in Silver Street yesterday for judging, with each entrant paying £5 to take part.

There were 21 entries in total for the challenge, which was won by Sue Rawlings, from Southwick, who received a £10 gift voucher for the store as her prize.

Hilary Henley, shop assistant at H.B. Pitt, said: “It went really well and we were delighted to have 21 entries for the challenge. Judging was hard as all the entries were very good.

“Although everyone was cooking the same cake from the same recipe, it was surprising how many variations there were. Sue’s cake just had the X Factor and she was delighted to win.

“The whole competition was great fun and it is something that we think we will repeat again next year as it was such a huge success.

“We are actually selling slices of the cakes for £1 each for Comic Relief in store, so if anyone wants a piece of delicious cherry cake they can pop in.”

H.B.Pitt also put together a pack for everyone having a bake sale for Red Nose Day at school or work, which includes 25 red cupcake cases, a 250g pack of Red Renshaw icing and a pack of red velvet cake mix.

The store has already raised £135 for Comic Relief and is expecting to add to that over the next few days. For more information contact 01225 776624 or email hbpittltd@hotmail.com
