TROWBRIDGE Outdoor Market is celebrating two years of trading this month, with Trowbridge Town Team chairman David Baker confident it will continue to go from strength to strength.

The market, which is located in Fore Street, has been operated by the Town Team every Wednesday for the last two years, utilising the services of Plain Fresh, while the general market area has been operated by Wiltshire Council.

From April, the whole of the outdoor Wednesday market will be operated by Wiltshire Council in partnership with the Town Team, after a review was carried out to ensure it continues to thrive in the future.

Work will also start soon on the campaign to introduce a Business Improvement District to Trowbridge in 2016 and the Town Team is expected to become part of that when it is established.

Mr Baker said: “Our weekly market has been a great success since it was introduced in 2013 and Wiltshire Council has successfully delivered a local market which is tailored to the Trowbridge community and the aspirations we have for a developing town.

“I never thought when we launched the market that it would ever be this successful and we are looking forward to working with all of our partners to bring even more variety to Trowbridge.

“Most of the current traders have said they are staying on and we also have some new additions coming as well, so the market is only set to keep growing.

The outdoor weekly market operates alongside the bi-monthly Friday Farmers’ Market in Fore Street and the six days a week indoor market operating in Castle Place Shopping Centre.

Plain Fresh will continue to support the Town Team and the Town Council with a range of special events, including markets throughout the year, including this year’s Magna Carta Charter Fayre.

The Charter Fayre, which will take place in July, will be held for the first time in living memory on the days stipulated in the Market Charter awarded to Trowbridge Baron Henry de Bohun in 1200.

Philip Whitehead, Wiltshire Council cabinet member responsible for markets, said: “Wiltshire Council is committed to ensuring the market remains a success in Trowbridge and will continue to provide stalls that meet the public need and complement the towns existing retail offer.

“We look forward to developing our excellent working relationship with Trowbridge Town Team that has been in place since the start of the Market in March 2013.”
