VOLCANOES, Tsunamis and avalanches were among the disasters recreated in model form by pupils at Staverton Primary School in Trowbridge for a Science Fair held on Tuesday (March 17).

The event, which was organised to coincide with British Science Week, saw children from every year group take on the challenge of making a science project based around the theme of disasters – the school’s current topic.

Inventive pupils came up with a wide range of models to recreate different types of disasters, while some even brought in survival kits with essential items for their project.

The projects were then showed off to parents and teachers at the school on Tuesday, where prizes were awarded to the best one in each class.

Caroline Barlow, science leader at the school, said: “It went extremely well and it was great to get have the whole school taking part, bringing in science projects they had made at home.

“The theme was disasters and we had everything from models that made waves to create a Tsunami to exploding volcanoes and avalanche prevention models.

“They were able to choose what they wanted to work on and then present it with at least three scientific facts to go with it. We were amazed by the models and it was clear that they had put a lot of work into them.

“We wanted to do something as part of British Science Week and the feedback we had from parents was great. It was extremely difficult for us to choose just one winner from each class as we were delighted with the creativity and dedication shown by all the children.”
