PROMISING musicians from St Augustine’s Catholic College in Trowbridge put on a performance to remember at the school’s Young Musician of the Year awards at Wiltshire Music Centre.

The annual event, which took place last Wednesday (March 18) at the music centre in Bradford on Avon, is now in its 24th year and recognises the most talented performers at the school.

This year’s event was won by Year 10 pupil Nicole Micheli, who performed Dave McGarry’s jazz ballad Dreams of You in the final, while singer Clover Kayne, Year 11, was the runner-up with her version of French composer Gabriel Faurè’s well-known song Après un Rêve.

Imogen O’Mahony, Year 13, won The Most Promising Performance Cup, singing Frondi Tenere and Ombra Mai Fu from Handel’s opera Serse. As well as the trophy awarded for each category, the three performers were given £100, £50 and £25.

Head of music at St Augustine’s College Richard O’Mahony, who is also father to Imogen, said: “We started off with just under 100 students and then 10 were chosen to play at Wiltshire Music Centre following a week of auditions.

“The four grand finalists were announced on the night and they then had a chance to perform for a second time, before the three awards were presented.

“We have some very talented musicians at the school and the awards are our way of recognising them. It was a wonderful evening and we had three very worthy winners.”
