PUPILS at The Mead Community Primary School welcomed two special visitors on Wednesday (April 15), when children’s author Cathy Farr brought along her Irish Wolfhound Mojo for a talk.

The writer spoke to Year 5 children at The Mead, as well as those from the school’s Wingfield site, about her popular fantasy adventure stories Moon Chase and Moon Crossing.

As part of the visit, the children had an opportunity to meet one of the hounds that inspired the writer, Mojo, who stands at a remarkable 37 inches and weighs 90kg.

Mrs Farr, who lives in South Wales with her husband, also told the pupils about how she got into writing, before selling copies of her books and carrying out a book signing.

Reading recovery teacher at The Mead Sam Phillips said: “The pupils really enjoyed it. Cathy spoke to the children about her experiences and how she got into writing, even though she wasn’t very good at school.

“She told them how it was something that she wanted to do and it was a very inspiring message for the children. They were all in awe of the dog and Cathy said how she used the movements and actions of her Irish Wolfhound to inspire the dog in her book.

“We like to hold events like this for the children to make reading real for them and bring the book to life. It inspires them and shows them that anything is possible when they grow up.

“The children were hanging of Cathy’s every word and speaking to them afterwards, it was clear just how much they enjoyed the visit. We want to use their excitement and apply it to what they are doing in class.”

Following her visit to The Mead, Mrs Farr also went to River Mead School in Melksham. For more information about the writer, visit www.fellhounds.co.uk
