THE annual Trowbridge Lions Mayfair got the town and Mayor Glyn Bridges rocking on Saturday, with Melksham Rock ‘n Roll among the entertainment.

Organised on behalf of Trowbridge Town Council, the event saw local organisations and charities set up stalls in Fore Street to raise money, while there was also lots of entertainment on offer for visitors.

The day included performances from the Young Shamrock Irish Dancers and Melksham Rock ‘n Roll, which also provided dance lessons for anyone interest in taking to the dance floor.

Among the charities supported on the day were Dorothy House Hospice Care, Alzheimer’s Support, The Salvation Army, Alabaré, Combat Stress, and the Greyhound and Lurcher Welfare Group.

Peter Cook, who is on the Lions fundraising committee, said: “It got off to a bit of a slow start and unfortunately we had a few stallholders drop out, but we did have a good turn out by the end.

“Town Crier Trevor Heeks did a great job once again organising the entertainment side and it was fantastic to see the Mayor of Trowbridge get up and do some rock and roll dancing with the Melksham group.

“He seemed to enjoy it a lot and Melksham Rock ‘n Roll got everyone in a good mood. All of the people I spoke to had a really fun time and it was great to be able to support so many fantastic causes.

“We are already thinking ahead to next year’s event and we have some ideas about how to refresh it. Hopefully, it will be bigger and better than ever before and we want to have even more stallholders taking part.”

The event also included Zumba demonstrations, although they were briefly halted to allow Town Crier Trevor Heeks to announce the birth of the royal baby.

Mr Heeks said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day and we were blessed with good weather. There were a lot of people who came along and the entertainment was fantastic.

“I announced the royal birth in the middle of a Zumba dance, so we got everyone to stop and then I called for three cheers, before we finished off with a rendition of God Save the Queen.”
