PUPILS at The Grove Primary School are among the hundreds of children in Trowbridge looking forward to watching the world premier of the new Horrible Histories Barmy Britain show in July.

There will be four performances of the show, which is part three of Barmy Britain, at Trowbridge Civic Centre on July 18 and 19, with additional shows for local schools taking place on the three days beforehand.

Among the schools attending the special performances of the show, put on by The Birmingham Stage Company, are The Grove, Larkrise Special School and Clarendon Academy.

The new show will include special scene to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta and The Grove will be having a week dedicated to the medieval period in the run up to the show.

Kate Bagnall, history co-ordinator at the school, said: “We will be having a Magna Carta themed week before we go to the Horrible Histories show to give the children a better understanding of the period.

“We will be having a visit from David Birks at Trowbridge Museum and he will be doing work shops with all the year groups at the school to help the children learn more about the Magna Carta.

“We are also hoping to have a medieval feast where the children can find out about the food and dance of the period and learn more about the lives of the people.

“Everyone is really looking forward to the Horrible Histories show and it is amazing for Trowbridge to be able to get the world premier, as it ties in so well with the Magna Carta celebrations.”

Trowbridge baron Henry de Bohun was one of the 25 barons elected to ensure King John honoured the Magna Carta, with several events taking place in the town this year to mark the anniversary.

The Horrible Histories TV series broadcast on CBBC won three BAFTA awards in 2010 and has also been immortalised in a series of books, toys and games.

Hayley Bell, Trowbridge Town Council’s Leisure Services Manager, said: “It is fantastic that Trowbridge has managed to attract the “Barmy Britain” tour to our town, especially in the same year that we are celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.

“Both initiatives are helping bring history to life and giving local people an opportunity to find out more in an imaginative and entertaining way.”

Tickets for the general public shows cost £15 each and are available from www.trowbridgecivic.co.uk or 01225 765072. For more information, contact Hayley Bell at hayley.bell@trowbridge.gov.uk
