THE Trowbridge Citadel of the Salvation Army celebrated its 135th anniversary this year with an anniversary concert last Saturday featuring the Wiltshire Police Band at St James’ Parish Church.

For the last 135 years, the Citadel has been an integral part of Trowbridge and its community, meeting both the spiritual and material needs of many people throughout its existence.

The anniversary concert at St James’ Parish Church on June 13 saw the police band perform a range of songs to an audience that included Deputy Mayor for Trowbridge Linda Self and her husband John, as well as Wiltshire Police’s Director of Intelligence.

Proceeds from the concert, which raised £500, will be donated to the Salvation Army’s work with helping those unfortunate, vulnerable people who fall victim to human trafficking and abuse.

Maurice Stribling, from the Salvation Army, said: “It was a great concert that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. There was something for all of those who came along and it was very well attended.

“The audience enjoyed their participation in the concert when given the chance to join in and sing from the provided song sheets when the band played popular songs from WWII.

“The concert got off to a rousing start with Fanfare and Soliloquy by Sharpe, with pieces ranging from the stirring Light Cavalry by Suppe to the more tranquil Salut D’Amour by Elgar and a comedy piece called Circus Galop.

“I would like to thank everyone who came along and supported the event and the Wiltshire Police Band for delivering a wonderful performance.”

Trowbridge Salvation Army will actually celebrating its 135th anniversary on October 27, with a weekend celebration taking place beforehand on October 24 and 25 at its hall in Castle Street.
