THOUSANDS of people lined the streets of Trowbridge to salute the serving forces and remember fallen heroes during a parade at the Wiltshire Armed Forces and Veterans Weekend on Sunday.

A procession of serving members of the forces, veterans and cadets made its way through the town while being cheered on by huge crowds, before the traditional military drumhead service brought the two-day event to a close in the park.

The commemorations, which are held annually to celebrate and remember the veterans and serving members of the armed forces, included further performances by Shrewton Silver Band and the Wiltshire Youth Marching Band on the Sunday.

Visitors to Trowbridge Town Park could also enjoy a bomb disposal demonstration and the static spitfire display, while Wiltshire Council’s wall of remembrance was also at the event.

“The Sunday was more about remembrance, which is why we also had the wall of remembrance in the park, and it was lovely to see the respect that is shown,” said organiser Maryrose Mantle.

“The procession was impressive once again and because they had the Freedom of the Town last year, 14 Royal Regiment of Artillery were able to parade with their AS 90 gun.

“We had great performances from Shrewton Silver Band and the Wiltshire Youth Marching Band and the drumhead service was the perfect way to finish the event.

“I would like to thank Prosec Consultancy for controlling the traffic for the parade. We attracted people from far and wide once again, with someone even coming from as far as Australia, and it is getting a great reputation.”

As well as the parade and drumhead service, there was a skirmish organised by 4th Wilts, Dog Company & Tommy und Jerry and an additional performance by the 1940s Roadshow.

Mrs Mantle added: “I have now got to try and top this year’s event next year now, which will not be easy. We are already planning for next year and the dates for the event will be June 25 and 26, so we hope to see another big turnout.”
