FALCONRY, medieval board games and storytelling will be among the activities for people to enjoy at Trowbridge Town Park over the weekend for the Medieval Play Day.

Organised by Trowbridge Town Council and Active Trowbridge, the free event will come alive to the sights and sounds of Medieval England, with a host of activities taking place tomorrow (July 25) and Sunday (July 26) from 11am-4pm.

The event is the latest celebration of the Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary and will also include music and plays, a recreation of medieval life in Trowbridge and medieval craft activities provided by Trowbridge Museum.

There will also be a full jousting show on the Sunday (July 26), plus medieval apothecary and surgeon and a Town Crier competition featuring Trowbridge’s very own Trevor Heeks.

Hayley Bell, Active Trowbridge leisure activities manager, said: “Everything will be completely free and we have activities ranging from falconry, medieval storytelling and archery to board games and craft activities.

“It is a major event for us and is very family orientated, so there are plenty of activities for people of all ages. It is the sort of event where people can bring along picnic with their family and just stay for the whole day.

“We hold the play day every year, which usually attracts thousands of people, but this year we are doing it with a bit of a twist to tie in with the anniversary of the Magna Carta.

“The jousting show will be taking place near the band stand and it is going to be spectacular, so I would recommend that people get there early for it. The whole event is going to be brilliant and I expect we will get visitors from outside of Trowbridge as well.”

Last year’s Sport and Play Festival saw thousands of people enjoy activities such as high ropes and zip wires, face painting, trampolining and rickshaw rides, as well as community club workshops.

Miss Bell added: “A lot of different people and organisations have come together to organise these events and the town should be very proud.

“We normally get around 12-13,000 people for our play days, but I think we will be attracting even more for this year’s event. The whole thing is free so there is no reason not to attend.”

There will also be a Medieval Fun Day for children held at The Grove Primary School next Wednesday (July 29) from 8.30am-5.30pm, with the cost for the event £14.
