THE competition was fierce in the third annual Longmeadow Community Football Tournament this year at Oasis Academy Longmeadow in Trowbridge.

Organised by Longmeadow Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, Trowbridge Neighbourhood Policing Team and Tesco Trowbridge Extra, the event saw six teams face-off against each other in a bid for glory.

The 5-a-side football tournament was refereed by Active Trowbridge staff, while the event also included a barbecue - with food and refreshments donated by Tesco.

After each of the teams played each other, the eventual winners were Tesco, who just edged out Selwood Housing’s second team on goal difference.

James McDonald, chairman of Longmeadow TARA, said: “We hope all those that came along and showed their support had a great time. We have already had some positive feedback from those who put forward the teams and look forward to doing it again next year.

“We must thank a few people for helping to make it happen, including Oasis Academy Longmeadow for the use of the school grounds and toilet facilities, our two refs from Active Trowbridge, who did a marvellous job throughout the day, and Cheryl Brown Community Champion from Tesco.”

The tournament was initially set up in 2013 as a way of bringing the community together and saw Longmeadow TARA take on the Trowbridge NPT team, but this year saw the event expand to include additional teams.

Tim Crisp, from Tesco, said: “With six teams entering the event, Trowbridge Police, Tesco, Selwood Housing - who entered two teams - Longmeadow and Longfield youth, the venue was once again Longmeadow School.

“Each of the teams played each other with the eventual winners being decided by the number of goals scored. The final game saw Tesco draw 0-0 with Selwood 2.

“In the end Tesco scored 20 goals, with Selwood 2 scoring 18 goals and Trowbridge Police finishing in third place with 14 goals. Throughout the event there was a BBQ run by James McDonald which took care of players and supporters’ needs.”
