Gourmet Street Food in Devizes is setting a monster sized food challenge.

Lee Newlands, owner of Gourmet Street Food, is challenging people to come and attempt to eat his gargantuan burger. Made up of a 36oz of meat, one whole farmhouse loaf of bread, six slices of cheese and a couple of rashers of bacon and a huge bowl of chips on the side for good measure, Mr Newlands is confident his burger cannot be beaten.

After seeing all of the amusing fail videos and comments on Facebook, I decided to take up his offer and try it out for myself. What I was presented with made my jaw hit the ground.

The burger was probably the biggest thing I had ever seen, an hour did not seem like long enough to attempt the challenge. After ten minutes I had made a fair dent in it, but the finish line was still a long way off.

By the minute 40 I had just about managed to get the last mouthful of the burger down, but still with the bowl of chips staring at me, I knew that I was going to have my picture added to the aptly named chump wall.

Mr Newlands said: “I have always had a passion for cooking and wanted to be a chef but I didn't like the idea of split shifts so I decided to take up a career in sales.

"I was a field sales rep for nine years, out on the road all the time and stopping at burger vans most days, quite often surprised by the poor quality of ingredients and the fact a lot of the food was regularly pre-cooked.

"This made me decide to set up my own using only top quality ingredients using local farmers and local butchers for my meat and eggs. I do still offer the usual breakfast items, bacon, sausages and eggs etc.

“At Gourmet Street food we use 6oz burgers rather than a standard 4oz which my butcher makes specially for me. I use only the best locally sourced ingredients from my local butcher, H Stiles, and other local companies. I watch a lot of cookery programmes and have seen the popularity in street food so I thought I would give it a go.

“The burger challenge has been a great success I have 21 people booked to do it, adding more every day and have a host of other challenges lined up. But I am already running out of space on my wall of shame."

After admitting defeat on the chips I shook myself off and decided it was time to throw in the paper towel. I have to say, I came close but I certainly don’t think anyone can beat this challenge.

“It was remarkable, I have never seen anyone finish the burger,” Mr Newlands said.

Mr Newlands has said that he is very grateful for his suppliers, Jewson who have been sending customers his way and his family who were all instrumental in helping getting the business up and running. He also mentioned that he shall also be opening a van in Chippenham.

Anyone interested in trying the challenge themselves can do so by visiting Gourmet Street Food, Devizes, or finding Mr Newlands on Facebook.
