THE Grove Primary could be home to the next award-winning songwriters after pupils wrote a song on good manners as part of a musically-driven initiative to make the school the best in the town.

Headteacher Kate Wilkins introduced the Number One programme to encourage the pupils, parents and staff to help make the school the best in Trowbridge after taking over the role in September.

“As the new headteacher, what I wanted to do was show the school that it has enormous potential and to give the children the opportunities to be the best they can be,” she said.

“When we started our Number One project, I have been saying to all the children that we are going to be number one in Trowbridge, number one in Wiltshire and eventually take on the world. I want the children to have high aspirations and be inspired to achieve things.

“For the first term we thought of conduct and we centred on our behaviour and respect as well as kindness and consideration to others.”

Each year group was set a challenge on the theme of conduct with Year 1 making Monster Manner sock puppets, Year 3 making good manners placemats while Year 2 children wrote a song to the tune of Little Mix’s Black Magic.

Recorded on Tuesday, the song entitled Good Manners includes lyrics such as ‘say you’re sorry’ to encourage children to better citizens in a fun and exciting way.

The 45-year-old headteacher added: “The way the music got involved is that it was our Year 2 kids wrote a song on good manners and it was just a fun way to get the message across and we have had lots of compliments about the behaviour of the children at The Grove and how good they have been in public.

“The children have absolutely loved it so far and all the children know and love the song as well as the puppets so it’s been a great start.”

Other topics to be explored throughout the year include e-safety, bullying and the environment.

Mrs Wilkins joined the school from Widcombe Juniors in Bath where she led the school to “outstanding” over eight years and hopes to achieve the same at The Grove.
