TROWBRIDGE Town Council have joined forces with the museum in their Spitfire project which aims to create a replica of the iconic aircraft in the town.

Following a motion which was passed by councillors, a Spitfire memorial working group was set up and they have since been gathering memories of residents who may have worked in its production.

Trowbridge Museum manager Hannah Lyddy is now asking for other people to get involved with the first stage of the project which hopes to gather oral histories from people first-hand who were involved or remember hearing stories from those involved in spitfire production. They hope to turn these interviews into a publication.

The second stage of the project will culminate into an exhibition that will be installed as part of Trowbridge’s Armed Forces weekend in 2017.

It is then anticipated that a memorial of the aircraft, which had factories in the town, will be replicated in fibre glass and will be located in the town park. A commemorative mosaic is also hoped to be installed at the Spitfire Retail Park which is the site of one of the former factories.
