BUDDING chefs at Walwayne Court Primary cooked up culinary delights on Friday as pupils took part in the Children’s Food Trust Big Cookathon.

Children from across the whole school took part in teams over the course of the day to produce individual cottage pies which they were then able to take home.

Becky Mould, art and design technology teacher said the whole aim of the cookathon was to show pupils how much fun cooking can be and to encourage them to have family time.

“The day was a real collaboration between children in each year group because in the morning we had Year 6 pupils working with reception kids and then Year 5 pupils with Year 4 and so forth.

“The Let’s Get Cooking scheme which this project is from is to encourage families over a four-day period in the week to fully embrace meal times without the uses of technology and to just enjoy spending that time together.”

The Children’s Food Trust cookathon is a national event every year with the aim of getting children to eat well and learn how to cook healthy meals from scratch.

As well as welcoming pupils from Horningsham Primary School, children were able to take home the results of their hard-earned efforts with individual portions of their homemade cottage pie.

Miss Mould said following the success of the event, she would be inclined to hold it again next year.

She added: “The reception children were weighing out the ingredients and it was lovely to see the partnership skills they shared with the older children as they were able to work on their maths skills.

“The children are also learning about what it takes to cook a meal, the technology and equipment involved and the vocabulary such as grams or millimetres.

“The day was great because food is part of the DT curriculum now and it is a brilliant way of enriching their learning because it shows them that cooking can be fun.”
