SLOW and steady wins the race and that was certainly the case at Staverton House's summer fete with their tortoise race on Sunday.

Around 100 people descended upon the fete, which raised £840 towards patient activities at the care home, from 2-4pm for a couple of hours of music, games, stalls and the eagerly anticipated tortoise race.

Boris, Madam, Peanut, Daisy and Rosie lined up for the 1.5m which, after an extended amount of time, was claimed in comprehensive fashion by Madam in one minute and 35 seconds.

"It was a pretty chaotic five minutes. They are not very good at going in straight lines. If they are hungry and it is hot they can motor but that did not happen," said race organiser and head of maintenance Darren Lean.

"The five of them did this last year so they were a little bit more experienced but that did not stop Boris, who most people thought would win, not moving an inch.

"Apart from that it was a great day, with a brilliant atmosphere and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The kids really enjoyed getting up close with the tortoises too."
