FOLLOWING a well-attended open event at the end of last year, the local Labour party, which covers the South West Wiltshire constituency, set about establishing a new Trowbridge group. After distributing welcome packs to the 165 Labour members living in the town, an inaugural meeting was organised and took place in the Town Hall in May.

The plan was to build on the recent increase in membership, launching a proactive group that can start working in the town to address local issues. One of the attendees, Julie Taylor, commented “It was a really positive meeting; it's great to have the Labour Party back in Trowbridge, especially as everyone seems so keen to be helping local people improve the town.”

The group are campaigning this weekend, ahead of Thursday’s EU referendum. “Being a rural county, Wiltshire takes real benefit from being part of the European Union. We’ve received over £6 million in funding for forestry, heritage, conservation and rural tourism projects, whilst EU subsidy payments are worth an average £20,000 to every farm” explained vice chairman Laura Pictor. “We’re really keen to highlight some of these local arguments so we’re looking forward to meeting fellow residents at our street stall."

The Labour Party will be holding their #LabourInForBritain stand in Fore Street on Saturday June 18 from 9.30am.
