OVER 500 people got a real kick out of a charity football tournament on Saturday organised Trowbridge brothers Sean and Liam Brereton in memory of their mum.

This is the fifth time the duo have arranged the popular event, at John of Gaunt School, to pay homage to their mother Carol and grandmother Jean Selway who died of cancer in 2010 and 2009 respectively.

The Pass-‘n’-Groove event, including a netball tournament, a fete, live music, a barbecue and a host of other activities, has raised around £4,000 for two local charities – exceeding the brothers’ goals.

Elder brother Liam, 30, said: “Overall it was a really great success with a lot of positives. If our beautiful Mum is up there I am sure she will be smiling down on us.

“What is exciting is that there is stuff to work on, to make it more dynamic, creative and cohesive. We have a good thing going on here, it is a steep learning curve but a good one at that.

“I am pretty knackered right now but it was all for a great cause.”

The total will be split between the Wiltshire Mind mental health charity and contributing to the £60,000 fundraising target to get Melksham three-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer Harry Kirkman a life changing operation in America.

Whilst Liam was overseeing much of the event, younger brother Sean, 23, and his football side claimed the Carol Brereton Shield much to his delight.

“It went really well, it definitely exceeded our expectations, I am very happy with how it all went,” he said.

“There was a great atmosphere, people really seemed to enjoy themselves and it was a lot of fun with a good mix of activities to do.

“It was nice to win the tournament with my school mates. This was the highest standard we have had so far so it was great to get the victory.

“I was a bit worried on Friday when the rain pelted down but luckily the weather held off. Each year this has improved and I think with these extra events going on we have taken it to the next level and hopefully we can build on it in the future.”

In the coming weeks the brothers will discuss what to work on for the 2017 edition, with preparations due to take place at the tail end of the year.
