TWO brothers are hoping their innovative recycling idea will take off as they aim to raise £20,000 for a luxury luggage business.

Ben and Harry Tucker from Whaddon launched their Kickstarter campaign this week and need to raise the funds in order to see their P L A N E business through – a project which turns fabric from aeroplane seats into handbags, backpacks and iPad and iPhone cases.

Ben, 29 said: “We had an idea of how we could recycle parts of planes which were a problem like the fabric from seats.

“We started thinking about how we could use it and this idea came quite naturally. I think because our family has a farming background, we have that mentality of reusing everything.”

With less than £4,000 to raise to create their first batch, the brothers are hoping to call on the support of locals after they started recycling old aeroplane items.

From turning an engine cowling of a Boeing 737 into a chair as well as a cluster bomb into a drinks cabinet, the pair believe they have always had a flare for the unusual.

“A lot of the time, aeroplane metal particularly of the seat gets melted down which is why we wanted to focus on the tough parts that would get incinerated or go to landfill,” Ben added.

“We’ve always known we wanted to get into business. While the project is in its infancy but we definitely have some pretty big plans.

“Doing all of the work is self-taught between us and we have almost in a way perfected the art of polishing aluminium. We want to take on big ambitious projects but we also know we become and engineer or joiner and that is why we are working with local businesses.”

If they reach they target by the end of the week, the brothers are working with a Frome company to produce the range.
