THE Newtown community are calling on the public’s support to help transform two derelict cottages into an afterschool youth café for youngsters in the area.

In a project estimated to cost over £50,000, the plans are being drawn together by the Newtown Area Residents Association (NARA) who have already secured planning permission to change the use of the former cottages into a community hub.

Vice chairman of NARA Sarah Turvey, 53 of West Street is now spearheading a public appeal, calling on local traders to donate their time or services towards the project.

“The kids don't have anything in Newtown,” she added.

“They just want somewhere to have a chat and have a coffee and be together. They could decorate it however they want it and we are appealing to people to help in an Extreme Makeover style project.

“The youngsters could have some responsibility in looking after it as the buildings have always been an eyesore and it will be a focus for Newtown instead of seeing takeaways and traffic.”

The Old Cottages are believed to be owned by Bethesda Baptist Church who have given their backing to the idea along with Trowbridge Town Council.

An architect has already given his services in scoping out the place which NARA hope to install a kitchen in and make way for a socialising space fit with tables and chairs.

Chairman of NARA Nicky Phillips, 51 of Park Street added: “The cottages are close to all the schools which seemed perfect and most areas have got a hall or community centre but Newtown has nothing whatsoever.

“We want to call on any trades people who could offer their services for free or at a community rate for a wonderful community project. We are trying to fundraise but we need to know how much we have to fundraise for.

“The architect who did the plans thought we would need around £52,000. The best we have been quoted is £72,000 which means there is quite a lot of work to do. It is a historic building and we can’t just not do anything.”
