JOHN of Gaunt School in Trowbridge have been celebrating records grades by their A Level students today.

A total of 66 per cent of the grades achieved were A*-B – something which headteacher Mike Gunston is over the moon about.

He added: "We are all delighted with the achievement of this wonderful group of students. They have applied themselves with commitment, perseverance and resilience and very much deserve their successes. It's been a pleasure to see them all grow and we wish them all the very best in their new ventures. Congratulations must also be given to our staff who work tirelessly to help all our students achieve their very best. With our new Sixth Form facilities opening this September this is a really exciting phase for the school."

A high-flyer student was Megan Hawker who achieved two A*s and one B. The 18-year-old said: “I really didn’t expect them at all. I want to go into law so I am going to rethink my ideas and hopefully get in somewhere in London but at the moment I’m just so happy.”

Fellow student Andrea Bieda, 18 achieved ABC and is off to the University of Southampton to study history.

She added: “Sixth form was really difficult and I am so relieved in the end that I got what I needed. It is like a weight lifted off my shoulders.”

The Year 13 students also achieved a 100 per cent pass rate which demonstrates its strong commitment to inclusion and students following vocational qualifications also performed extremely well with 70 per cent of entries reaching the top distinction or distinction* levels.

The school’s top performers include: Megan Hawker, Cameron Barry, Clare Alley, Andrea Bieda, Abena Biney, Rachel Bowen, Rebecca Flounders, Jo Hudd, Kaya Isaac, Katie Rae, James Speich, Seraphina Studd, Katrina Westwood and Emily White. Students will now move on to read a wide variety of exciting subjects, including Law at Newcastle and Bristol, History, Mechanical Engineering and Healthcare Science at Southampton, Medicine at Bristol, Psychology at Cardiff and Languages at Queen Mary London.
