TROWBRIDGE Post Office is closed to the public today as workers have gone on strike over cuts to jobs, services and pensions.

Members of staff have been picketing outside the Roundstone Street premises after the Communication Workers Union announced the 24-hour strike at the end of last week.

CWU members voted overwhelmingly for industrial action in August following a series of announcements from the Post Office this year that will see cuts in certain areas to make savings.

If approved, the changes could see cuts to pensions for long-serving members of staff including Sally Baker who has worked in the Post Office for 20 years.

The 54-year-old said: "It is the pension cuts that is the most important thing for me. This place has really changed over the time I've been here and the feedback on us striking hasn't been that bad.

"Most people are supporting us and while we have got an odd comment about the inconvenience, yesterday when we talked to the customers, they were supporting us.

"We want job security. The pressure in there is immense and the week before last we only had two members of staff and that is unfair customer service.

"We want the goverment on board and to not let any of these cuts happen especially when many of use have worked here for so many years and have the experience."

The strike will last all day and Melksham Post Office may also be affected.
