AN 'ageless' former Bradford on Avon resident had reason to celebrate this week after turning 100 on Monday.

Centenarian Helena Green, who has lived at Staverton's Old Vicarage care home for around a year, toasted the milestone with her family, friends and staff.

Much to the delight of Mrs Green, she was treated to her favourite meal of roast lamb with a glass of Prosecco too as well as gifts such as slippers, clothes and other treats in what was a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Her grandson Rob Turtell, 58, said: "She said she had a wonderful day and was very grateful to everyone who showed up on this special occasion.

"The lamb went down particularly well and she really appreciated some staff from her former care home in Ravenscroft coming down too - which shows just how well liked she was.

"She spends quite a lot of time in her room so it was nice to get her out into the lounge for a change.

"I do not think she thought she would reach 100 as she had some severe health problems a few years ago but somehow she recovered thankfully. She certainly does not look or act like she is 100.

"When she got the card from the Queen she was just so thrilled. She is a monarchist so she was very pleased to actually have something from the Queen, she will treasure that."

Mrs Green was brought up in Broughton Gifford but then moved to Bradford on Avon, Kingston Avenue, well into her 90's before going into care.

She was married to Leslie Green for nearly 60 years and had one daughter, Wendy, who died 20 years ago, has two grandchildren, Rob and Anna.

"I do not know if she has set her sights on 110 just yet. She is a pragmatist. She takes it one day at a time but we will see," added Mr Turtell.

"When you talk to her it is like talking to a 21-year-old. She holds a perfect conversation and her memory is better than mine. It is like she is ageless.

"She is such a friendly person, she would take to anyone. I think that is why the staff like her so much. We are all very proud of her."
