TROWBRIDGE mayor Linda Self is calling on the town’s support to help the homeless this winter by donating clothing and toiletries.

As one of her chosen charities for the year, Breakthrough Trowbridge support anyone over the age of 18 who is homeless or at risk of homelessness by providing shelter, hot food, drinks and advice.

With the winter fast approaching, Cllr Self hopes people are charitable this season by donating items such as jogging bottoms, jeans, sweatshirts, woollen hats, gloves, scarfs and socks as well as toiletries such as deodorant and soap.

She said: “I want people to help because I think it is terrible that we have to do such things in this day and age.

“The weather is getting colder and people are still forced to sleep on our streets so the more people in the town that can help provide these items, the better.”

Donations should be dropped off to Trowbridge Town Council in the Civic Centre by November 26.

Revd Barrie Dearlove along with his wife Dorothy have been spearheading the way Breakthrough Trowbridge have operated in the town for the last year and hope people dig deep with their donations.

“This appeal is vital,” he said.

“What we are trying to do is establish our name in this town which is working but we are in desperate need of volunteers.

“We have had such a good response from people since we were first in the paper and that is the way we want to move forward and hopefully get more people aware of the work we are doing.”

Revd Dearlove added that with plans in the pipeline to open up to four days a weeks for people at their temporary base in the Salvation Army in Castle Street, more volunteers are needed to help with things such as washing up.
