A TROWBRIDGE woman had her head completely shaved on Wednesday (March 1) to raise money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Alma Band, 79, has raised over £1,000 so far from sponsorship money by losing her hair at her home in Lodge Park.

Mrs Band said: “I feel so proud to have raised this money as the Wiltshire Air Ambulance is absolutely marvellous and they do such an important job.

“I’m also proud of everyone who has donated including friends, family and a few local businesses.

“When my son-in-law Andy came round after the shave he kept staring at me so I said ‘What are you looking at? Have I got a bug on my head?’”

“I know he was only teasing me though. He actually said my face looks thinner now which was kind of him.

“I decided I wanted to raise money for the Air Ambulance when I read about their new helicopter appeal in the Wiltshire Times.

“After I read that I made up my mind and didn’t look back. I’m really pleased I did it and hope other people get on board with supporting them too.”

The Air Ambulance is hoping to build the airbase on land at Outmarsh Farm in Semington, which will consist of an Operations Centre for the service’s helicopter and aircrew and a base for its Charity Team.

Cas Loudon, donor relationship co-ordinator at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We’re so grateful to Mrs Alma for raising money for our Airbase Appeal.

“Alma had read all about the Appeal in the local press and this gave her the idea to have her head shaved.

“It was a very brave thing to do and even Cindy, her dog, couldn’t believe it! We were really pleased to share the “hair-raising” experience with her.

“Her family and friends have been so generous in sponsoring her and we truly appreciate their support. The money raised will help us to complete the building and equipping of our new airbase at Semington.

“We’ve had really good support from the community since we launched our Airbase Appeal to raise the remaining £1.25 million needed. If you would like to get involved or hold a fundraising event contact the Charity Team on 01380 739453 or go to our website www.wiltshireairbaseappeal.co.uk”.
