SELWOOD Housing has reversed its decision to remove fire sprinklers from houses in Trowbridge following a spirited protest, backed by the Wiltshire Times.

The housing association came under heavy criticism from residents and councillors last month when it announced plans to scrap sprinklers at 212 homes in the Studley Green estate due to high maintenance costs and a ‘low-level risk of legionella’.

Barry Hughes, chief executive at Selwood Housing, said: “After ongoing consultation with both the Residential Sprinkler Association and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service we will be continuing the sprinkler system pilot at Studley Green.

“All three parties have worked hard together to establish an innovative use of modern technology which is cost-effective and provides better warning for residents in case of fire.

“We have also managed to rationalise the servicing agreement using a new maintenance programme of contractors and our own trained staff to come up with a solution to keep the sprinklers for the same cost as decommissioning them.”

Since the sprinklers were installed in 2001 people living on the estate say they have prevented three house fires and saved two lives.

John Alford, 82, a Studley Green resident of 59 years who campaigned for the sprinklers to be kept, said: “It came as a real shock to hear that they changed their mind but it’s really great news.

“It just shows what a bit of campaigning can do and I for one am delighted that the safety of residents in Studley Green will continue to be ensured in the event of a fire.

“I must say a big thank you to Councillor Graham Payne and the Wiltshire Times for their support and for bringing this to public attention – we all owe ourselves a big pat on the back.”

The installation was a first in the UK and was promoted by Wiltshire’s then chief fire officer John Craig, as well as being championed by former BBC Crimewatch presenter Nick Ross.

Ben Ansell, chief fire officer for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Following consultation we are delighted with the decision by Selwood Housing to retain the sprinkler systems at Studley Green.

“Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service remain committed to sprinkler systems in the UK.”

Cllr Graham Payne said he was 'really pleased that common sense had prevailed' and labelled it as a win for the residents of Studley Green.
