A NEW memory café for people with dementia has opened in Trowbridge.

The café, located at Palmer Gardens garden centre, will provide people with dementia with the opportunity to interact with each other, make new friends, take part in activities and enjoy an array of refreshments.

It was launched yesterday (Thursday) with representatives from Adcroft Surgery and Alzheimer’s Support, who worked in partnership to create it.

Gabby Wright, practice nurse at Adcroft Surgery, said: “There’s a fantastic Alzheimer’s community in Trowbridge but there wasn’t a memory café, so we wanted to fill the void.

“The launch went really well with lots of patients and carers there to mark its official launch.

“It was a good start and we hope to see it grow over the months.

“The idea is to support people with dementia and their carers with a range of activities organised by us for them to enjoy each month, as well as to provide information on dementia.

“At the launch we asked patients what they would like to do at the café and they came back with games, crafts singalongs and more, so we're now working on a programme involving those things.”

The memory café will be open on the second Thursday of every month at the garden centre in Islington between 2.30pm-4pm.

Currently, only patients from Adcroft Surgery can attend it, but following the amalgamation in July, which will see it merge with Widbrook Surgery and Bradford Road Surgery to form the Trowbridge Health Centre, patients from all three practices will be invited.
