A GROUP of Keevil villagers braved the London MoonWalk at the weekend to raise money for cancer charities.

Last November the village’s drama group put on a production of a play called Cheshire Cats, an emotional drama based on a group of friends walking the London MoonWalk.

Following the production, cast members decided they would like to walk it for real so teamed up to form Keevil Katz and began training.

On May 13, the team of 18 walked through the streets of London overnight wearing striking bras designed by 71-year-old resident Pat Tucker.

Four-time cancer survivor Sarah Dow, who completed the walk, said: “We're very proud to report that we completed the walk safely and in one piece.

“Our wave went around midnight and we averaged about five and a half hours to complete the course of 15.6 miles, making a grand total of 280 miles.

“It was certainly an experience. I used to live in London and I've always felt that it's at its most beautiful at night, and the walk was no exception.

“Admittedly the last three miles were pretty gruelling, but that's when friendship kicks in – we kept each other’s spirits up and made it back before the rain properly set in.

“Chatter in the coach on the way home was considerably quieter than it had been the previous afternoon as we rested tired limbs and kept our eyes closed, arriving back in Keevil around 8am Sunday morning, looking forward to our beds.

“Well done to everyone in Keevil for supporting or participating, especially Viv for organising us all, and Pat for designing the fabulous costumes - this is why Keevil is so great.”

The walkers set off from Clapham Common and circled Battersea Park before heading along the north and south banks of the Thames, through St James Park to Hyde Park Corner.

It is a 26-mile walk but the team were ‘half-mooners’, which meant they completed 13 miles before calling it a night.

So far the team have raised £3,511 for Walk The Walk, a grant-making charity that funds breast cancer initiatives and other breast cancer charities in the UK.
