SIX households in one street in Trowbridge are celebrating after they each scooped £1,000 in the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Maureen Mulchay and her husband Vic, of The Spinney, have only been playing for three months and were amazed when their postcode, BA14 6DS, was chosen at random in Wednesday's draw.

“I’m delighted - I never dreamed this would happen,” said Mrs Mulchay, who works in admin for Age UK in Devizes. “I signed up because a family member won £10 in the draw a couple of months ago.

“I thought ‘let’s just give it a go’. But I’m definitely going to keep playing.”

Mrs Mulchay said she plans to spend her winnings on golf clubs to use at Whitley Golf Course in Melksham, where she is a member.

Gordon Nicholls, who is retired, also plans to buy a new set of golf clubs with his winnings. He lives next door to Mr and Mrs Mulchay with his wife Mary.

Fellow winner Ivan Sverdloff, 70, has lived in the road for three years with his wife Joy. “It was a lovely surprise to win,” he said. “We haven’t decided what to spend the money on yet but it will probably be home improvements for the summer.”

He used to play the Lotto but now only plays the People’s Postcode Lottery. He has been entering for around a year.

Another winner, Donald Taylor, 66, lives in The Spinney with his wife Sue. “I’ve been playing the Lotto for years but we switched to the People’s Postcode Lottery to support good causes.

“I’m absolutely delighted; but the money is going straight into our savings. And our direct debit to the People’s Postcode Lottery will carry on,” said Mr Taylor, who worked in finance before retiring.

Two other households in The Spinney, who chose not to be named, also won £1,000 each. The draw works by awarding prize money to each home in one postcode area - so long as the households have signed up to the draw.

The win is especially poignant following Dementia Awareness Week, as the People’s Postcode Lottery has donated more than £20,000 to Alzheimer’s Support in Wiltshire. As a result, the charity has been able to expand activity clubs and social events for the region’s ageing population.

People’s Postcode Lottery Ambassador Danyl Johnson said: “Congratulations to our Trowbridge players. It’s great to see so many neighbours winning together – it’s what it’s all about.”

A minimum of 30 per cent of ticket sales goes directly to charities and players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised more than £197million to date for good causes across the UK and internationally.
