AS Lions around the world celebrate their centenary year, groups from Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Westbury, Warminster and Mere joined forces for an epic adventure.

Around 50 members walked from the Tithe Barn in Bradford on Avon to Warminster in honour of 100 years of Lions - and, while not all walked the full distance, Trowbridge Lion Richard Lovelock said it was a great opportunity for the Wiltshire groups to meet up and swap stories.

“The weather rain off until late Sunday afternoon - we were lucky.

“Not many people know that the Lions club is a global phenomenon, still going strong 100 years after starting in Chicago, USA,” Mr Lovelock said.

“The movement came to London after World War II and there are now more than 46,000 clubs with 1.4million members in 180 countries.”

Mr Lovelock, who is retired and lives in Paxcroft Way, pointed out that Lions clubs are ideal for those new to the area and looking to meet people, avoiding isolation in later life.

While the Lions are mostly known for their fundraising work and community spirit, there are a lot of social engagements, like this weekend’s walk, to keep members physically fit and active.

“Socially, we meet for informal drinks, meals, BBQ's, skittles, quiz nights and more. We also meet for more formal and ceremonial events annually and provide the opportunity to meet up with members from other clubs.

“We work hard and we play hard,” he said. “New members are always welcome.”
